5 Tips To Refresh Your Running Routine (Video)

Ashley Hicks and Toni Carey of Black Girls Run agree that an exercise routine can quickly turn mundane, but they know just what to do to refresh it. The healthy living advocates say trying various sports to keep up your cardio is an excellent way to keep things fresh.

“One of the things that I like to do to switch it up is try other sports,” says Carey. “I like to do yoga and boxing just to spice it up a little bit.”

The Black Girls Run co-founders also suggest training for both long-distance and short-term races.

“Look for a race to do,” suggests Carey. “That’s another big benefit of Black Girls Run, we do races all over the country. Whether it’s a 5K or a marathon, training for that will get you onto the pavement.”

Other tips from Carey and Hicks include finding a running group, so you can have a “party on the pavement,” as well as changing locations and simple interval training. Also, team up with your girlfriends as running partners! You’ll be spending quality time together while having your best supporters by your side.

“Incorporate interval training,” says Hicks. “Maybe run for five minutes, sprint for 30 seconds. Find a way to mix it up. That helps you work on your speed and also helps with your endurance.”
