Hair Care Tips: How To Maintain And Care For Hair Extensions

Dootie

My daughter Dootie is headed back to school tomorrow(it’s her senior year) and she begged me to let her try out my hairstylist Alicia Igess from Urban Tangles Salon. She wanted to have one of the best in the city to do her hair for school,  so I called up Alecia and she was happy to do her! Alicia was recently voted Best of Atlanta 2014 in Jezebel Magazine for Hair Extensions, so I knew that Dootie was in good care! Dootie knew early on how she wanted her hair styled, the color and length she wanted. Having plenty of pics to show your stylist is great when you’re a new client.

A few weeks ago I went to Indique Virgin Hair Extensions to see all the new products. I left with two bulks of Pure Natural Hair from their new line for Dootie because I knew she wanted to have her hair done for school. I personally no longer wear sew-ins because I’m giving my natural hair a break, so I often wear clip-ins when I want to achieve a different look or add more volume.

Once we got to the salon, Dootie’s natural hair was washed and conditioned then the installation process began. She brought along a few pieces of colored hair as well to add to what she already had. Alicia started off by braiding the hair down, sewing in the extensions, cutting and blending the hair, curling it, then ending with a quick hair care session with Dootie on how to maintain her hair. Then she was done!

Dootie really loves her hair and she can’t wait to go back to get another service! Alicia said this particular hair style will last her about 2 months and she recommends washing the hair every week. She loved the texture of hair from Indique and has worked with the hair line before. It’s very manageable, curls good and it doesn’t shed. Below you will find images and a few tips from Alicia on how to maintain and care for hair extensions and if you do decide to get your hair done by Alicia please tell her I sent yah! xoxo

Tips from hairstylist Alecia Igess…

1. Seek out a professional for this service who is an expert. They should know and tell you how long you should keep it in. They will know the correct braid pattern for your texture and type of hair. They will consider what’s going on with your hair period to determine if you are a candidate for extensions.

2. Protect your hair whether it’s extensions or not. Pull it up and cover it. Yes…with a scarf or a bonnet. Don’t sleep on wet hair. Treat it like you care about it. You should come out if the extensions proud of what’s under them.

3. Make sure you get maintenance. That’s as simple as shampooing Nd conditioning your hair separately. No combos! A clean and healthy scalp promotes growth. It’s hard enough to really cleanse your scalp when you have the extensions in. That is no excuse. You should go in for a shampoo or you should do it at home.

4. Coloring the extensions yourself requires you still shampoo and then condition them with a non moisturizing product. Color shampoo and conditioners are good.
