How I Said, “Yes” To My Wedding Dress!

Last week my husband and I celebrated 16 years of marriage and we both can’t believe how much time has went by. I remember pretty much planning the whole thing. Back then, I didn’t want a lot of fuss about the wedding. If it was left up to me, we would have eloped because I didn’t really want a big wedding, I wanted to go to an exotic location and get married on the beach in a bikini lol. My husband thought of his family and wanted everyone in it, so we opted out for that. Later on he stated “yep, we should have eloped” lol.

Back in the late 90’s, I really didn’t care about designer gowns but I knew that I wanted a form-fitting sparkly dress. I really didn’t have a budget, I just wanted to buy something I looked pretty in. I visited lots of bridal boutiques but came up with nothing. My dream gown was a strapless mermaid styled look that fishtailed out at the bottom with lots of beadwork and rhinestones. Once I tried that style of dress on though, I looked like a huge beach whale because white makes you look extremely large and it made my hips look humongus! I was very disappointed. It only took me about two weeks though to find the perfect dress but it was by accident…

I was fumbling around in David’s Bridal one day because that’s where I was looking for my bridesmaid’s dresses when I overheard a sales associate consoling someone over the phone. She kept apologizing to a young lady and saying that everything was going to be ok. After she hung up the phone she was telling the other sales associate that a bride-to-be called off her wedding and didn’t want her dress that she had on hold. I felt so bad after listening. The saleslady said the dress was paid in full and had been altered just for her. They were trying to figure out what they were going to do with it. I asked her what did the dress look like and she said it was very sparkly and a Cinderella type style with a tulle bottom.

I said I would take a look at it but only if they would give me a discount if I liked it lol. She went to ask her manager if we could work out some type of deal. Back then I was a size 10, the dress was a size 12 and way too long. After trying it on, I fell in love with it. They threw in the alterations and hemmed the bottom and I bought that wedding gown for just $500! I loved it and I was happy with my choice. Some may say, wow that dress was cursed but I didn’t see it that way and I’m not that superstitious lol.

On our wedding day, everyone loved the dress, I felt comfortable, I added my mother’s wedding veil(my something borrowed) pearl earrings and diamond tennis bracelet and I headed down the aisle. It was a perfect day, I remember it was suppose to rain because it does every Memorial Day weekend but it held off for some reason. It was full of sunshine and clear skies. My wedding dress sat in my closet in a box for about a year before I donated it to Goodwill. Although I have a daughter, I could have passed it down to her but I want her to have her own dress that she can pick out, try on and enjoy. She already told me from looking at pictures that it wasn’t her style anyway lol. Did you girls find your perfect wedding gown on your big day? Did you have drama, how did you say Yes To Your Dress? Chime in! xoxo
