My Review: A Wrinkle In Time

I am going to start off by saying, I know that a lot of people read, “A Wrinkle in Time” as a child, but I was unfortunately one of those that didn’t. So with me knowing that I didn’t get a chance to read the book, made it hard for me to follow along watching this film. And don’t think well, why didn’t you take the time to read it? Well, I have a very hectic schedule, so sorry and it was not on my to do list lol. I actually watched the movie twice while out in Los Angeles, in a pre-screening and then again at the Hollywood premiere and again I will say, I was lost.

The director Ava DuVernay kept stressing to people in interviews and in the audience at the premiere that the movie is “for kids” ages 8-14 years of age and I agree. I have always been the one that love watching action, romance and comedies. When it comes to going any deeper than that or watching anything that is fantasy or that requires using your imagination going deep within, that’s when you lose me for sure. I am just not wired that way. I know plenty of friends that absolutely loved the book and if you are a fan of the novel, then you will love it and it is worth seeing with your family. It’s all about being a dreamer and warrior.

The storyline is solid, the actors that they casted are superb and ofcourse they all did a great job, again it was just not for me. What I did love in the movie was the beginning when Meg played by Storm Reid was bullied in school. This resinated with me because my own daughter was bullied pretty much throughout her middle school and high school years. I was constantly up at the schools arguing with parents, faculty and defending her, I was exhausted. I could relate to that part in the movie and it pulled at my heart strings for sure. I loved Meg’s character and she stayed strong throughout that ordeal.

Oprah Winfrey (“Mrs. Which”) I loved Oprahs characters, we all need to see strong females in film, teaching, encouraging and inspiring young people.

Mindy Kaling (“Mrs. Who”), very whitty character and smart! I loved her vibrant but quirky costumes throughout the movie!

Reese Witherspoon (“Mrs. Whatsit”) very graceful, peaceful with full of words of wisdom

Favorite Character: Deric McCage is Charles Wallace Murry steals every scene that he is in and you just want to pinch his cheeks! Although he is pint-sized, he doesn’t back down for anyone! I loved his relationship with his sister Meg…awh!

Ava did a great job directing this amazing film, it’s shot so beautifully that its breath taking to watch! And ofcourse you guys know I loved the costumes, they were extremely vibrant, innovative and popped on camera, I give the movie a solid C. Till next time….
