National Bring A #GirlPreneur To Work Day

Pink Lemonade Stand Foundation

My longtime friend Nicole Garner (The Garner Circle) has a non profit organization here in Atlanta called, Pink Lemonade Stand Foundation where they mentor young ladies who are interested in starting their own businesses. I was very intrigued with the program and thought to reach out to her to let her know that I would love to chat with anyone who would be interested in world of media. So yesterday was the day to bring a #Girlpreneur To Work Day and I invited two young ladies to 11 Alive News station where I hang out a lot. They are like family to me and I do a lot of work with them and they were excited to give the ladies a tour of the station and to share what they do.

I teamed up with professional makeup and hairstylist Nyssa Green of The Green Room Agency who does most of the news anchors on set and also veteran news anchor Karyn Greer who both shared their experiences and tips to break into the industry. The reason that I wanted to bring the girls to NBC Studios was because this is how I got my start almost 9 years ago! I was a 36 years old intern at a news station similar to 11 Alive news. I hung out at the station for hours on end learning everything I could about editing, tv production, floor directing and more! Besides being a professional blogger, I am also a certified tv producer.

The young ladies that I had to mentor were 14 year old Takiyah Keirney who’s a 8th grader and dreams of being a makeup and hairstylist and also 15 year old Alexis Inniss who’s a 9th grader and wants to be a fashion designer. Both ladies were a bit shy at first but they eventually warmed up lol. They were too cute and took in all the information we shared. I told them a lil backstory with me as a teenager around their same age and being homeless in high school but still maintaining good grades. They were shocked to find out that happened to me. I told them that I worked hard through my adversity and I didn’t turn out too bad lol!

It was a great experience with the girls and the staff at 11 Alive News and I can’t wait till the next time but guys if you can take time out of your busy schedule and mentor a youth in need, do just that! Its a great feeling and I hope that the two young ladies I mentored, walk away with even bigger dreams! You can also sign up to have your daughters be apart of the organization as well! Till next time! xoxo
