Tisha Campbell’s Son Inspired Her New Book

Tisha Campbell Opens Up About Motherhood, Autism, Love and Her Journey with Son Zen

Actress and comedian Tisha Campbell is opening up about one of the most transformative chapters of her life: motherhood and her journey alongside her 25-year-old son, Zen, who was diagnosed with autism at just 18 months old.

Now, Tisha and Zen are sharing their story in a heartfelt new memoir, The A Word: A Mother’s Journey Through Autism and Love. The book explores their experiences, challenges, growth and the beautiful bond they share as mother and son.

Writing the Story Together

Interestingly, it was Zen who encouraged his mother to write the book. Having experienced so much together, the mother-and-son duo felt that sharing their journey could help others.

Zen explained that because he and his mother have been through so much together, they both knew this was the best way to tell their story. And while Tisha has always been his advocate, Zen says he advocates for her just as much.

For Tisha, sharing Zen with the world wasn’t always easy. She admitted that her instinct had always been to protect her children, keeping them away from Hollywood and the spotlight as much as possible.

That changed after she watched Love on the Spectrum and saw how audiences embraced the cast while gaining a greater understanding of autism. She approached Zen about sharing more of their relationship on social media, hoping their story could offer hope, encouragement and representation to other families.

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with fans embracing Zen and affectionately welcoming him as their “internet nephew.”

Zen Is Living Life on His Own Terms

Now 25, Zen is confidently stepping into his own. He currently works two jobs, supports his mom and has become a familiar face to Tisha’s social media followers.

He also has big dreams for his future. Zen hopes to become a professor, explaining that he simply loves teaching and helping people learn.

When asked how he feels about the attention he receives online, Zen kept it simple: he loves it! And that playful personality has made him a social media favorite.

Tisha has also spoken openly about recognizing Zen’s unique abilities from an early age. While she noticed that he was excelling in certain areas, she also became concerned when he wasn’t meeting some developmental milestones. His autism diagnosis ultimately began a journey that transformed the way she viewed motherhood and deepened her understanding of her son.

A Mother’s Love, A Son’s Voice

At the heart of Tisha’s story is her decision to accept Zen exactly as he is rather than trying to change him.

She proudly describes him as a wonderful human being and a young man who works hard to become as independent as possible. Their relationship has evolved into something beautifully reciprocal: Tisha advocates for Zen, while Zen advocates for his mom.

Through their memoir, social media moments and appearances together, the two are showing audiences the humor, love and everyday realities of their lives and proving that sometimes the most powerful stories are the ones we experience together as a family.
