Yesterday, my family and I were headed to a beautiful Mother’s Day brunch at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis in downtown Atlanta when we walked into the lobby and suddenly spotted tons of people dressed in elaborate furry costumes!
At first, I was completely confused and honestly a little startled because I had no idea what was happening but it looked like SO much fun! For a quick second, I thought maybe there was a mascot parade or some huge themed event taking place. Then I quickly learned it was actually Furry Weekend Atlanta happening at the hotel!
I ended up chatting with one of the attendees, and he kindly explained the convention and furry fandom to me. It was such a fun and fascinating experience to see everything in person because I’ve only ever caught little glimpses of it online through social media. The creativity, costumes, and energy were truly next-level! Some furry costumes costing over $5,000!!

Furry Weekend Atlanta, better known as FWA, has grown into one of the biggest and most colorful furry conventions in the world and Atlanta absolutely comes alive during the event! 🐾
Founded back in 2004, FWA began as a small gathering of furry fandom friends meeting up around Atlanta before blossoming into the massive celebration it is today. What started in living rooms and casual hangouts has evolved into an exciting annual convention packed with creativity, incredible costumes, art, dancing, gaming, performances, and nonstop fun centered around anthropomorphic animal characters.
Held every year in Atlanta, the convention welcomed an impressive 18,000 attendees in 2026, making it one of the most attended furry events worldwide! The name was inspired by the city’s popular anime event, Anime Weekend Atlanta, giving it that signature Atlanta convention flair.
Beyond all the fun and fandom magic, FWA also gives back in a big way. Organized by the non-profit Furry Weekend Atlanta, Inc., the event promotes community, creativity, acceptance, and charity throughout the Southeast donating extra proceeds to charitable causes each year. Talk about fun with heart!
