One of the most magical moments of our honeymoon adventure in Sweden was stepping back in time during our visit to the historic ruins of Visingsborg Castle on the beautiful island of Visingsö. Our dear friends, who call Sweden home, treated us to a lovely tour of the island, and the journey itself felt like something straight out of a storybook. After taking the ferry from Gränna across the breathtaking waters of Lake Vättern, we arrived on Visingsö, surrounded by peaceful scenery, fresh air and some of the most beautiful views we had ever seen.
As we made our way to the castle ruins, I couldn’t help but imagine what life must have been like centuries ago. Built around 1570 by Per Brahe the Elder, Visingsborg Castle was once an extraordinary stronghold and the magnificent home of the powerful Brahe family. It reportedly took nearly a century to complete, and when it was finally finished in 1662, the grand castle featured four equal wings, impressive towers and dazzling gilded rooftops that once shimmered beautifully over Lake Vättern.
Walking among the remaining stone walls, distinctive stepped gables and arched entryways felt both peaceful and romantic. There was something incredibly special about standing hand-in-hand with my husband, Kelvin, surrounded by the remains of a place that had witnessed centuries of history, love, power and change. Although much of the castle was destroyed by fire in the early 18th century, the ruins that remain still carry an undeniable sense of grandeur and mystery.
The castle’s history is just as fascinating as its beauty. Count Per Brahe the Younger, one of its most notable residents, lived a life of extraordinary influence and luxury, maintaining an impressive library, a private army and an estate that played an important role in Swedish history. In its later years, the castle was used to house prisoners of war before a devastating fire changed its future forever, leaving only portions of the magnificent structure standing today.
For Kelvin and me, visiting Visingsborg Castle was so much more than simply sightseeing. It was a chance to slow down, take in the beauty of Sweden and share a quiet moment together while exploring a place filled with centuries of stories. From the scenic ferry ride across Lake Vättern to strolling through the romantic ruins with our wonderful friends, it was truly one of those unforgettable honeymoon memories that we will cherish forever.
Sometimes the most beautiful part of traveling isn’t just discovering a new place it’s discovering it hand-in-hand with the person you love. 💕🏰🇸🇪
