Fetty Wap Discusses the Fame & The Fall

Fetty Wap, born Willie Junior Maxwell II, is a rapper, singer, and songwriter from Paterson, New Jersey. Recognized for his signature melodic rap-singing style, raspy tone, and emotionally driven street anthems, his sound blends Southern hip-hop influences including inspiration from Gucci Mane with infectious hooks that helped define his early success.

He burst onto the global stage in 2014 with his breakout hit Trap Queen, which climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100and became a cultural phenomenon.

In August 2022, Fetty Wap pleaded guilty to federal drug charges and was sentenced in May 2023 to six years in prison in New York. He served his time at FCI Sandstone, a low-security federal facility in Sandstone, Minnesota, before being released on January 8, 2026.

Born with congenital glaucoma, he lost his left eye at just six months old. After reconstructive surgery at age 12, he made the personal decision to stop wearing a prosthetic eye, choosing instead to embrace his individuality.

During his appearance on Tamron Hall Show, Fetty Wap reflected on his rapid rise in the music industry and how quickly fame transformed his life. He spoke openly about stepping into stardom while still feeling like a regular person at heart. He also addressed the humbling reality of his arrest and incarceration, sharing how the experience forced him to slow down, reassess his choices, and reevaluate what truly matters.

Fetty Wap also opened up about the challenges he faced growing up and how those early struggles shaped many of his decisions both good and bad. He spoke candidly about accountability, personal growth, and the responsibility he now feels to move differently. Reuniting with his children after prison was an emotional turning point, one that shifted his mindset and deepened his appreciation for the simple things in life.

Now focused on rebuilding with intention and clarity, Fetty Wap discussed what the future looks like not only professionally as an artist, but personally as a father and a man committed to growth.
