Janelle James Talks About Going on the Road Doing Stand-up and What It’s Like Bombing on Stage

Janelle James reflected on how her comedy audience has grown since the success of ABC’s Abbott Elementary.
“The crowds are definitely bigger now, which is amazing,” she said. “People show up expecting Ava Coleman, and they quickly realize they’re not getting that version of me on stage. But Janelle James, as Kelly knows, is still pretty great.”

She also shared her outlook on performing:
“I always say, if you don’t feel those nerves, you don’t care. I like having that little flutter before I go on. It keeps me sharp.”

When discussing the new season of Abbott Elementary, Janelle noted how much her character has evolved.
“Last season was a lot for Ava. She even got a new love interest,” she teased. “I love romantic comedies, so getting to play in that space on the show has been really fun.” See more inside…
