When it comes to reality television, Carlos King knows how to create a moment and more importantly, he knows how to keep us talking about it!
The award-winning executive producer has spent nearly two decades behind some of television’s most talked-about reality shows, including The Real Housewives of Atlanta and the hugely popular Love & Marriage: Huntsville. Today, he’s not just producing the headlines he’s increasingly becoming part of them.
Through his podcast Reality with the King, interviews and hosting work, Carlos has created a platform where reality stars can tell their stories in their own words. And if there’s one thing Carlos understands, it’s what happens when real relationships, conflict and complicated personal lives become television.
When Reality Becomes the Headline
One of Carlos’ recent interviews made plenty of noise when former Real Housewives of Atlanta star Peter Thomas sat down with him for his first interview following his release from prison.
During the conversation, Peter also introduced his much younger girlfriend, Alex, to the public. Carlos, naturally, wasn’t going to let that moment pass without asking questions!
Alex revealed that there is a 32-year age difference between the couple and spoke positively about Peter, describing him as someone with a heart of gold who, like everyone, has made mistakes and learned from them.
And then came that moment.
During the interview, Alex sat on Peter’s lap and Carlos admitted that he knew the unexpected visual would get viewers talking.
When asked why he suggested she sit on Peter’s lap, Carlos explained that Alex was already in the room while he was interviewing Peter and that it felt odd for her to simply stand there while they discussed her. So he asked if she would sit on Peter’s lap.
Her response?
“That’s my man.”
And just like that, reality TV magic happened!
So, What Makes Great Reality TV?
Carlos has a pretty straightforward answer: authenticity.
As someone who has spent years casting reality television personalities, he says he can often tell within seconds whether someone has what it takes to connect with an audience.
For Carlos, it’s about having a genuine spark and a story to tell—not someone who desperately wants to be famous or is willing to manufacture drama just to get on television.
He believes the best reality stars aren’t necessarily the people who want fame the most. They’re the people who naturally have something compelling to share.
And that’s an important distinction in today’s reality-TV landscape.
Carlos acknowledged that some newer reality stars may enter shows with an eye toward becoming influencers, landing endorsements and building their personal brands. While he understands wanting to make money from newfound fame, he believes that motivation can sometimes affect the authenticity of what viewers see on screen.
Remember Teresa Giudice Flipping That Table?
Well, Carlos King was right there underneath it!
Yes, you read that correctly.
Carlos shared one of the wildest behind-the-scenes stories from his producing days: he was actually underneath the table during the infamous Teresa Giudice table-flipping moment on The Real Housewives of New Jersey.
The reason?
Danielle Staub was preparing to present a book, and Carlos was responsible for getting the surprise book into the scene.
So, Carlos literally crawled underneath the table, tapped Danielle on the ankles, handed her the book and then quickly made his exit.
Then Teresa flipped the table.
And Carlos?
He was underneath it!
The funniest part is that he had absolutely no idea Teresa was about to unleash one of the most iconic moments in reality television history.
Carlos explained that Teresa was authentic, which was exactly why the moment worked. Producers knew her personality, but even they couldn’t predict that she was going to physically flip the table.
That’s the beauty and unpredictability of reality television.
You can set the scene, but you can’t always predict what people are going to do once the cameras are rolling.
When Does Reality Become Too Real?
Of course, producing reality television comes with more serious responsibilities, particularly when someone’s real-life struggles are involved.
Carlos opened up about one of his shows on the Oprah Winfrey Network, Belle Collective, and a cast member named Marie Monroe, whose mother was struggling with drug addiction.
Marie chose to share that painful part of her life with viewers, even allowing cameras to follow her as she attempted to help her mother.
But Carlos said there eventually came a point when he felt continuing to film the situation would become exploitative.
Once he realized that Marie’s mother wasn’t getting better, Carlos made the decision to stop filming with her.
For him, there is a line between documenting someone’s reality and taking advantage of their pain for television.
The Moral Compass Behind the Cameras
Carlos also connected that decision to the way he was raised, particularly by his mother.
He explained that growing up with a strong maternal influence helped shape his understanding of the difference between reality and exploitation.
He acknowledged how difficult it was to watch Marie’s story unfold, but he respected her willingness to share such a deeply personal experience.
Ultimately, Carlos said his hope was that her mother would eventually get the help she needed.
And that’s something that can sometimes get lost when we talk about reality television: these aren’t fictional characters. They’re real people living through real situations.
For Carlos, being able to recognize that distinction is part of being responsible behind the camera.

Of course, we couldn’t talk to the “King of Reality TV” without getting into the latest headlines surrounding Love & Marriage: Huntsville.
Fans have been very vocal about a recent casting decision, and Carlos has found himself at the center of the conversation.
The decision sparked plenty of questions and plenty of reactions from viewers but Carlos is standing by his choice.
