My Review: Sinners Starring Michael B. Jordan

Just caught an early screening of Sinners, which officially hits theaters today—and wow. Directed by Ryan Coogler, Sinners is a chilling and deeply atmospheric horror film set in 1933 Mississippi. It masterfully blends supernatural terror with the harsh realities of the Jim Crow South, creating a uniquely haunting experience.

The story follows twin brothers Smoke and Stack—played by Michael B. Jordan—who return to their rural hometown after years in Chicago working for organized crime. Their dream? To use their underworld earnings to open a juke joint, a safe space for the Black community to celebrate music and joy in the face of systemic oppression.

But as the juke joint begins to pulse with life, a darker force awakens. Vampires—drawn to the rhythms, the revelry, and the resistance of the people—emerge as a new and terrifying threat. Among them is Remmick, a sinister white vampire played by Jack O’Connell, whose presence becomes a looming danger to everything the brothers are trying to build. Rising blues musician Sammie, portrayed by Miles Caton, also steps into a pivotal role as the fight between good and evil intensifies.

The film doesn’t shy away from the brutality of its historical setting, but it also brings a fresh, supernatural lens to the trauma and resilience of that era. Sinners is equal parts social commentary, Southern Gothic, and spine-chilling horror—and it lingers with you long after the credits roll.

I’m not even gonna lie to y’all—I’m such a wimp when it comes to scary movies. The moment I found out Sinners had vampires in it, I was like uh oh, this might not be for me. I usually avoid anything with demonic or overly disturbing scenes because I will go home and have the worst nightmares.

But honestly? This film was different—and thank goodness for that. Yes, there were a few gory moments (it is a horror movie, after all), but I actually got through it without covering my eyes the entire time. More inside…

Let’s talk about Michael B. Jordan real quick—when I tell you he did his thing?! He brought both Smoke and Stack to life with so much swag and grit. You could feel the weight of both characters, and the way he balanced them? Whew. You can definitely tell he and Ryan Coogler have built something special after working together on multiple successful films. That trust really shines through here.

Also, the dialogue was fire, and those brothers? Straight-up sheisters—but you couldn’t help but root for them.

I thought Miles Caton was amazing—definitely the breakout star in my eyes. He’s such a talented young actor, and his voice? Incredible. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he does next because he’s a natural on screen and just so captivating to watch.

It was also really refreshing to see so much diversity on screen. I honestly wasn’t expecting to see that much talent from different backgrounds all in one film—Asian, African American, and white actors all working together. That kind of representation would’ve been unheard of in the actual 1930s, which makes it even more powerful in the context of the story.

And I totally get why they cast Hailee Steinfeld—she owns every scene she’s in and looks absolutely stunning doing it. The wardrobe was on point too, styled by the legendary Ruth E. Carter (yes, the Ruth Carter who did Black Panther). Hailee’s looks throughout the film were flawless!

The cinematography, the music, the storyline—everything was top-tier. This is definitely a must-see! Whether you’re planning a date night or heading out with friends, Sinners will leave you feeling impacted and thinking long after the credits roll.

Speaking of credits… make sure you stay until the very end! There’s a little surprise waiting—Marvel-style.
