Garcelle Beauvais reflected on her remarkable journey from immigrant to supermodel and actress, revealing that her big break came from an unexpected encounter that changed her life forever.
Beauvais, who moved to the United States from Haiti at just 7 years old without speaking English, said she learned the language by watching Sesame Street. Her modeling career began after friends and strangers repeatedly told her mother she should pursue modeling, though they had no idea where to start.
Everything changed when a friend invited her to work as an extra on a commercial. Inspired by the lead actress, Beauvais decided she wanted to pursue a career in entertainment. After tracking down the Fort Lauderdale modeling agency that represented the actress, she borrowed her mother’s car and drove there without an appointment, portfolio, or even headshots.
“I didn’t have an appointment, didn’t have pictures, didn’t have anything,” Beauvais recalled. “I just thought maybe they’d give me some information.”
On the way, fate intervened. While stopped at a red light and checking her makeup, a woman from the car behind her walked up and handed her a business card.
“She said, ‘You should be a model,'” Beauvais shared. “And it was the exact agency I was driving to. No appointment, no pictures nothing. It was unbelievable.”
That chance encounter launched her modeling career, eventually leading her to sign with legendary Ford Models founder Eileen Ford, who encouraged her family to move to New York. From there, Beauvais built an impressive acting career with early appearances on The Cosby Show and Miami Vice before landing memorable roles in Coming to America and The Jamie Foxx Show, cementing her place as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars.
