Meatballs in Sweden? Yes, Please! Our Delicious First Meal in Gothenburg

After getting settled into our beautiful hotel in Gothenburg, we were more than ready to eat! After a long nine-hour flight, we took a stroll over to a charming and lively restaurant that came highly recommended: Kometen. The restaurant has such a warm, inviting atmosphere and is a beloved spot in the city, making it the perfect place to kick off our Swedish culinary adventure!

Now, I had always heard that Sweden is famous for its meatballs, and my dear friend Elvira, who is Swedish, promised me that I was definitely in for a treat. Gothenburg is filled with adorable cafés and incredible restaurants around practically every corner, but there was something about Kometen that immediately drew us in. Maybe it was the lively atmosphere, maybe it was the charming setting or maybe we were simply starving! Either way, we were excited to dig in.

We decided to try some traditional Swedish favorites, and I quickly learned that many meals are served with delicious accompaniments like fresh bread, pickled cucumbers and lingonberries. The combination of sweet and savory flavors was something I wasn’t quite sure I would enjoy at first especially since I can be a little picky when it comes to trying new foods but wow, was I pleasantly surprised!

The lingonberries paired beautifully with the savory meatballs, while the pickled cucumbers added just the right amount of tang. Every bite was full of flavor, and I can honestly say everything was absolutely delicious!

And while I’m not much of a wine drinker, apparently enjoying a nice glass of wine with a meal is all part of the experience for many Swedes. My husband, however, was more than happy to enjoy the spirits!

We sat outside and enjoyed the gorgeous weather, which made our first meal in Gothenburg feel even more special. Between the delicious food, beautiful surroundings and the joy of experiencing a new culture with my husband and friends, it was the perfect lunch date to begin our Swedish adventure.

If you ever find yourself in Gothenburg, come hungry and be sure to add Kometen to your list. The food was flavorful, the atmosphere was lively, and those Swedish meatballs definitely lived up to the hype!
